Harpreet Kaur had gone to Shoppers’ Stop in Ansal Plaza with her husband and went to the food festival for a while. She hung her bag on the chair she was sitting on.
“The festival was being held in the amphitheatre at Ansal Plaza. I had placed a lot of things on the chair. While leaving we forgot to pick up the bag and left for home,” Harpreet, who designs auditoriums and lives in Hauz Khas, said.
The Ansal Plaza division officer, Sub-Inspector Arvind Sharma, was on duty and reached the amphitheatre around 5 pm. He spotted the bag on the chair and took it into his possession. “When I checked, the bag had in it Rs 1,12,040 in cash, some credit cards, a driving licence and a PAN card and the address of the lady who owned it. I checked the address but she was not living there any more. I found a card with her office number on it and called on it,” Sharma said.
Meanwhile, when Harpreet reached home and found the bag missing, she returned to Ansal Plaza to look for it. She asked some people there about her bag and they told her the bag had been taken by the police. “I went to the chowki and found that a police officer was counting all the notes and that they had mentioned it in their records as ‘baramadgi’. I took a sigh of relief and was touched by the fact that the officer was so concerned and wanted to give it back to me,” she said.
The officer had found her address and contact number through the driving license by the time Harpreet reached the chowki. “I could see that if I would not have reached there, the officer would have reached me. He had made a lot of effort. He told me I didn’t need to worry and that they were more concerned about returning my money,” Harpreet said.
After verification and a nod from senior officers, the bag was returned to Harpreet with its contents intact. “It was my duty and I am proud of what I did,” SI Arvind Sharma said.
