New Delhi A Police officer deputed with the Intelligence Bureau allegedly shot at himself in his East Delhi house on Friday morning, a day after marrying for the second time, the police said. He is stated to be critical and is still fighting for life at a private hospital in East Delhi.

The officer, identified as Alok Bhal, 46, lives in E-1710, Krishna Nagar. He is posted as deputy central intelligence officer in the Capital. According to the police, Bhal had divorced his first wife some time ago.

The police are yet to find out whether he used his official revolver in the incident.

A senior officer said Bhal returned home late on Thursday night and his mother had a fleeting glimpse of him going to his room on Friday morning. Then, there was a loud noise of gunshot — the family members rushed to his room and found Bhal bleeding, the officer said.

Bhal is at present recuperating at Max Hospital.

The police are investigating whether he used his official weapon in the suicide bid. The officer said a case of attempt to suicide (under Section 309 of Indian Penal Code) will be registered at Krishna Nagar police station; further investigations are on.

“He had married for the second time yesterday, and we will question his wife to find out whether he was depressed or deeply anxious over anything,” the officer said.

The investigating officer said the police would also question his first wife, whom Bhal had divorced “sometime back”, to look into all possible angles. Bhal reportedly has a daughter from his first marriage who lives with him at the Krishna Nagar house.

According to a senior officer, the police are yet to question Bhal’s family members since they are still in a state of shock, waiting at the hospital.
