The undertrial, Rana Khunti, is an accused in the high-profile Mulu Modhvadiya murder case. Mulu Modhvadiya, a Porbandar-based industrialist, was a close associate of senior Congress leader and Porbandar MLA, Arjun Modhvadiya.
After Khunti escaped, the driver of the police van in which he was being transported, and a constable with the Junagadh police, lodged a complaint under Sections 224 and 225 of the Indian Penal Code with the Kutiyana town police against four policemen. They have been identified as Sub-Inspector Mani Shankar Bhanushankar, Bhoja Deva, Uka Malde and Jadav Sidi. The four were produced before the judicial magistrate first class court of Kutiyana town in the evening.
Khunti is the second undertrial after Jetha Keshwala in the case to have escaped from custody. Keshwala had escaped two weeks ago while being taken to a court in Ahmedabad. Incidentally, Mulu Modhvadiya’s son, Bharat, made a statement a week earlier that Keshwala’s escape had increased the threat to Arjun Modhvadiya and himself. He had also alleged a conspiracy being hatched to kill him and Arjun Modhvadiya. He had also said that he had information that Khunti might try to escape from custody.
