Cops ‘beat’ man to death, charged with murder

Faizabad Three policemen, one of them an Inspector, have been charged with murder for allegedly killing a man at Bikapur in Faizabad district on Wednesday.

According to locals, Inspector-in-Charge of Bikapur Kotwali police station Shamsher Singh, accompanied by two constables, raided a Dalit locality in Toramafi village and arrested 30-year-old Ram Kumar Nishad for allegedly selling illegal country liquor. Locals said that police took Nishad to a remote spot and during interrogation they started beating him up with batons causing his death.

An FIR was lodged against the inspector and his colleagues after locals protested. While constable Shashi Pandey has been named in the FIR, the scond constable remains unidentified.

Faizabad SSP RKS Rathore said an inquiry will be conducted by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarwajeet Singh, who is posted as Circle Officer at Rudauli. The postmortem has remained inconclusive, Rathore said.
