The farmers set on fire around a dozen vehicles, including a tanker and an UPSRTC bus. They also ransacked the Bajna police outpost before setting it ablaze, said the police. The deceased has been identified as Rajendra Singh.
Mathura District Magistrate Anita Singh Meshram said: “The farmers had staged a sit-in in Naujheel demanding an increase in the amount of compensation for the land acquired for the Expressway project. The police were trying to pacify the protestors when they began pelting stones on them.”
Following this, the police cane-charged the mob and threw tear gas shells to disperse them.
Several were injured in the clash, she added.
Inspector General of Agra Zone, G P Sharma, said: “The farmers indulged in violence first, pelting stones on the police.”
Over six policemen, including three station officers, have suffered injuries, said a police officer.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) of Mathura, B D Shukla, said: “While one death has been confirmed so far, several others are undergoing treatment at the Mathura District Hospital.”
In the state capital, Home Secretary Mahesh Gupta said: “I have received information about two or three deaths, but there has been no official confirmation so far.”
