For the purpose, the police would soon be launching a special drive to identify unsecured Wi-Fi connections and ask the owners to secure these connections.
“Starting Monday, a police team of 80 members including cyber experts will be moving in three batches to the areas having Wi-Fi connections. Armed with laptops or web-enabled cell phones, the members will ascertain whether the connections are secure or not. They will also alert the owners about the hazards of an unsecured connection,” said Sanjay Mohite, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Enforcement).
Officers of various police stations from the city have been trained for the drive by cyber crime expert Vijay Mukhi. The Mumbai Police had recently encountered misuse of unsecured Wi-Fi connections when terrorist group Indian Mujahideen had hacked into the unsecured connections of an American national Kenneth Haywood, of Khalsa College and a Chembur resident to send terror mails.
