The students were demanding re-evaluation of their answersheets and were going to burn effigy of Chief Minister Mayawati when policemen, including lady constables, started beating up the agitators.
When inquired, the Lucknow DIG, N K Srivastava said: I would look into the allegation of assault and tearing off clothes of a girl. But, the policemen merely prevented agitators indulging in unlawful activity of burning effigy of the Chief Minister.
Six of the students including four girls were arrested under Section 151 CrPc for breach of peace. They were produced before the magistrate and all were later released on personal bonds, he added.
The Senior Superintendent of Police (Law& Order), Raghuveer Lal said, The students had failed in the first year examination of Law and were demanding to re-evaluate their copies. They claimed that their answersheets were not checked properly.
One of the girls engaged in a scuffle with a lady constable when her clothes got torn, the SSP said. This comes a day after police had lathicharged mediapersons near the CBI court after which the government had transferred an additional superintendent of police and held him responsible for the incident.
