Mumbai, February 22 Providing reprieve to advocate Ashok Sarogi, former lawyer of extradited gangster Abu Salem, a sessions court on Friday ordered the police to give him 48 hours’ time before arresting him. Sarogi had filed an anticipatory bail fearing arrest in connection with the suicide attempt by Salem’s lawyer Pallavi Ashar.

Though the offences registered against Sarogi were bailable, he feared that he could be booked under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetting suicide), which is non-bailable.

Adhoc Additional Sessions Judge M Y Mankar, however, rejected the application since offences registered against Sarogi were bailable.

The court also ordered police to intimate Sarogi about his arrest 48 hours in advance, excluding court holidays.

Sarogi’s associate, Pallavi Ashar had allegedly attempted suicide on February 19, citing Ashok Sarogi as the main reason for her drastic step in her suicide note. Asher alleged that he was trying to tarnish her image.

Sarogi has been booked along with three others on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal conspiracy.
