Lucknow The Lucknow police are probing the possibility of the involvement of relatives in the murder of the elderly couple — Arun Jaiswal and Urmila — whose bodies were found in their Madan Apartments flat in Hussainganj on Sunday.

After questioning the couple’s adopted daughter Gunjan and their former servant Chhotu, the police have collected some clues regarding the motive of the murder. Gunjan, who arrived from Kolkata on Monday, has confirmed that no valuables are missing from the flat.

Lucknow SSP (Law & Order) Raghuvir Lal, who is supervising the investigation, said: “The killers must be among the relatives, as no evidence of anybody going out of the building has come to light so far.”

The four watchmen of the building maintain that no outsider visited or was seen leaving the building after midnight. “It appears that the killers stayed back in the building at night and walked away in the morning to avoid raising doubts,” Lal said.

The murder of the couple took place sometime between 11 pm and midnight.

“The fact that the assailants got a friendly entry into the flat and there was no evidence of any resistance from the couple, again raise suspicion about the involvement of a relative,” Lal said.

“Moreover, Gunjan told us that relations between the couple and the 14 families — all close relatives living in the Madan Apartments — were not really very cordial.”

Gunjan also reportedly told the police that she had talked to her mother just two days ago, but did not hear of any trouble. She asked him to call the couple’s former servant Chhotu, who knew about the business dealings of her father.

“We have called up Jaiswal’s lawyer to know about the properties they owned in the city and outside,” the SSP said. The clues so far indicate that he had some business or property in partnership with some people about which no one except the couple knew. “The murders might be linked to this, as Gunjan will only be the inheritor of property she knows about,” Lal said.

The quizzing of Jaiswal’s former servant Chhotu is helping the investigation, he added.
