Ludhiana The Basti Jodhewal police recovered a kidnapped child within hours of his abduction and also arrested the accused on Friday night. The kidnapper had sought Rs 5-lakh ransom for the release four-year-old Rishabh, the son of local businessman Mukesh Kapoor.

According to the police, an old servant of the family had abducted the child on Friday evening. The accused was caught while he was trying to board a train to Uttar Pradesh along with the child.

Rishabh was kidnapped from outside his New Madhopuri home on Friday evening around 4 pm, the police said. The family came to know about his abduction around 7.30 pm when they got a ransom call from an unidentified caller. This call had reportedly been made from a PCO.

The police said the boy was playing with his friends when Vimlesh lured him with kites and took him away in an autorickshaw.

A native of New Azadpur district in Uttar Pradesh, Vimlesh left his job with the Kapoors sometime ago and was now working elsewhere.

Sources said that in order to escape the police attention, Vimlesh kept moving in the inner lanes of the city and it was during this time when he made a ransom call to the family.

The family reported the matter to the Basti Jodhewal police and the police beefed up vigil at the exit points of the city.

When the police checked from the PCO, from where Vimlesh had made the ransom call, the police got more clues and went to the railway station. It was there that they spotted the boy with the accused. Though the accused tried to escape, he was overpowered by the police.

After registering an FIR against Vimlesh, the Basti Jodhewal police produced him in a local court. He has been remanded to police custody till January 20.
