Kolkata Two mobile phones were recovered from an inmate of Alipore Central Jail following a joint raid conducted by the Detective Department of the Kolkata police and Alipore jail officials on Sunday night. Binni Roy, a murder convict, is alleged to have made extortion calls from jail using the cellphones.

A senior officer of the Detective Department said that a south Kolkata businessman reported to the Bhawanipore Police that he had received extortion calls.

“On receiving the complaint, we started investigations. We asked for permission from the jail authority to conduct a raid inside the jail and seized two cellphones from cell number 11,” said the officer. Roy was caught red-handed using a cellphone after the police made his wife call him, said the officer.

ADG (Prison) B D Sharma said: “Bhawanipore police got the report and they along with the DD asked for permission to conduct a raid inside the jail. I allowed them. The officers along with the jail officials interrogated Roy and recovered two cellphones. Roy has been taken in police custody.”
