Gandhi went on hunger strike demanding a vigilance probe into the alleged irregularities in construction of the Lalbuag railway overbridge.

Around 3 am on Friday, a police team evicted Gandhi and his supporters from the parking lot of the VMC building at Khanderao Market after his blood sugar level went up.

This came hours after a medical check up of Gandhi by an SSG Hospital doctor. The doctor had detected rise in the level of blood sugar and recommended that Gandhi be taken to a hospital. “His blood sugar level rose to a worrying point and doctors opined to shift him to a hospital,” Additional Commissioner of Police Jitendra Rao told The Indian Express.

Gandhi was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Department of Medicine at SSGH. After he refused to take anything orally, doctors injected and infused medicines intravenously.

“He is out of danger and now his blood sugar level is normal. But we have kept him in ICU to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of his health,” said a doctor attending to Gandhi.

The doctor further said that if his condition remained normal, the Congress leader can be discharged on Saturday. “We will do another check up tomorrow and decide the future course of treatment,” the doctor added.

The city Congress, meanwhile, alleged that Gandhi’s hospitalisation was a political move even as police maintained it was only due to his deteriorating health. “The Chief Minister (Narendra Modi) is coming to Vadodara on Sunday to flag off marathon. And to show them in good light, BJP is not allowing Congress to protest. This is murder of democracy,” said city Congress president Narendra Ravat.
