Ludhiana, January 31 Intensifying their drive against illegal tractor-trolleys plying on the city roads, the traffic police have challaned over 130 such vehicles in the city this month.

According to sources, nearly 10 tractor-trolleys were challaned and impounded today. However, the exact number had not been compiled till the filing of this report.

A police party led by Sub- Inspector Mukesh Kumar impounded two tractor-trolleys in Haibowal Kalan. These vehicles were laden with sand.

According to the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, tractors can be used for agriculture purposes only; but a number of these vehicles are being used for commercial purposes instead.

According to the traffic police, these vehicles not only flout the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act but also pose a serious threat to the lives of the public.

Sources said tractors don’t have good brakes and these cannot be stopped at once.

A number of persons have lost their lives in the accidents caused by tractor-trolleys.

Recently, a youth lost his life when he was run over by a tractor-trolley on the Pakhowal road near the traffic lights on the Sidhwan Canal.

SI Mukesh said their drive against the tractor-trolleys would continue in the coming days.

He urged the people to report the matter to the police if they find any tractor-trolley illegally plying on the city roads.
