“We have started seizing documents from several departments. We had asked for several documents including case details and assessee details. But we have received just two of the building plans so far,” said Damayanti Sen, DC, DD.
The Detective Department also has its doubts about the authenticity of the papers it has received from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). “It seems the plans are not from the central record room since they do not bear any seal,” said a senior DD official.
“Moreover, a day after the Stephen Court fire, we were told by the KMC that the plans were not available and that the additional two floors were constructed illegally and were regularised after charging heavy penalty from the owner. But the plans we have got show the two additional floors were sanctioned earlier. There is a mystery. We are investigating into it,” added the official.
Debashis Kar, DG (II), building department at the KMC, said, “They have to believe us. Initially, we could not trace the plans, but later when they were, we submitted the same.”
