Chandigarh “Area councillors should have the authority to inspect whether work in their areas have been completed to their satisfaction or not,” said Mayor Kamlesh while speaking at the Municipal Corporation (MC) House Meet on Tuesday.

In the House Meet held last year, the MC had passed a resolution that payment to contractors should be released only after a completion certificate is obtained from the councillors. The Administration while rejecting the resolution had issued a show cause notice.

Kamlesh said a reply will be sent to the Administration to convey the sentiments of the councillors.

The House also debated the outsourcing of manpower for sanitation work with councillors arguing whether extension should be given to Aman Securities and Detectives for the recruitment of safaikaramcharis. The agency has been blacklisted after it allegedly bungled funds in the corporation.

Officials of the MC, meanwhile, saiod that while tenders were allotted for three modules including the hiring of security guards and workers in various categories, only Aman Securities was found qualified for hiring safaikaramcharis.

The councillors, however, agreed that two months’ extension should be given on the current contract till fresh tenders are invited.

Former Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said the contract for 690 safaikaramcharis was too huge. It should be further divided into smaller modules, which would encourage more agencies to come forward, he added. Mayor Kamlesh, however, said that if suitable contractors are not found, they would request the Administration to allow them to make temporary arrangements for hiring sweepers.
