Chandigarh With the Board examinations approaching, anxiety levels of students are running at an all-time high. At a time like this, the counselling cells in schools are proving their worth. School authorities say that these units, introduced with the objective of easing out stress among students, have been given the thumbs up not only by students but parents as well.

The trend of having counselling cells in schools is very recent. Keeping in view the ever-rising competition levels and expectations to score better, most schools have set up these cells to ease the pressure students face. While counsellors are present all year round to help students, their help is sought mostly during the examination time.

“We make sure that a student’s problem is addressed at the earliest. Children get more stressed out during exams which may affect their performance adversely. So the counsellors guide them in the best possible manner," says Sanjay Sardana, director of Manav Mangal Smart School.

Another teacher of Shivalik Public School agrees, "At times, children find it difficult to share their problems with parents. They have a notion that their parents will not be able to understand their situation. Hence, they turn towards school counsellors."

School authorities say that parents too have approached counselling cells. "Exams are one of the major reasons of a parent-child conflict. At times, parents burden their child with unrealistic goals which creates tension between them. We have had cases where parents come to us for counselling. Since a counsellor is able to see things more objectively, it is easier for the child as well as the parents to discuss their problems," says Punita Singh, counselor at Carmel Convent School.
