According to the police, the couple had probably consumed poison on Monday night.
The Visavadar police said they received a phone call about two bodies lying on the outskirts of the village around 3 am on Tuesday.
A search operation was conducted but the couple could not be traced. The area was again searched in the morning and the two were found lying on the grass in a narrow approach lane between Lariya-Moniya villages.
The 108 emergency ambulance service was called and the two were shifted to the Junagadh Civil Hospital around 12 pm on Tuesday, where doctors on duty declared them brought dead.
The deceased have been identified as Varsha Vashram (19) and Jagdish Manga (20). Varsha is a resident of Sanala village, Palitana taluka in Bhavnagar district, while Jagdish is a resident of Bhalwav village, Lathi taluka in Amreli district.
A police officer said: “Prima-facie, it seems to be a case of elopement. We have registered a case of accidental death. We are yet to record the statements of the kin of the deceased. The actual reason behind their death would surface only after a detailed investigation.”
Hospital sources said the boy’s body has been handed over his relatives, while the girl’s body is lying unclaimed in the hospital morgue.
