The robbers later decamped with booty worth several lakh. The Nazirabad police suspect the involvement of an insider in the crime.
According to a police officer, three unidentified assailants attacked Kailash Kapoor (57) and his wife Anjana (52) with hammers and iron rods. The couple sustained major head injuries in the incident and were admitted in the ICU of Kulwanti hospital.
“The couple are still not in a condition to make a statement. We are waiting for them to recover,” said Inspector Ashok Singh.
On a complaint filed by Kapoor’s brother, Satpal, Nazirabad police has registered a case of loot under Section 394 of IPC against the three unidentified assailants.
According to Satpal, the robbers decamped with Rs 10,700 in cash, jewellery worth lakh and two mobile hand sets.
“The assailants were well aware that Kapoor and his wife were alone in the house, therefore they were targeted,” said Singh.
Kapoor’s son Rohit was employed in New Delhi, and Shradha, their daughter had settled in New Delhi after her marriage, he added.
Locals informed the police that due to a wedding ceremony in the park on Saturday night, hundreds of people came to the locality.
Making use of the situation, the assailants entered Kapoor’s residence and carried out the crime.
Dr V K Gupta, Kapoor’s neighbour, was the first to know about the incident when he heard Kapoor cry for help.
“On entering the house, I was left shocked to find an injured Kapoor lying on the floor and an unconscious Anjana tied to the chair,” he said. “Kapoor told me that some men had entered the house around 2 am and remained inside for more than two hours.”
To avoid catching the attention of the neighbours, the assailants turned on the TV and raised its volume. “They repeatedly hit Kapoor and his wife till both fell unconscious,” said Gupta.
After regaining his consciousness in the morning, Kapoor dragged himself to the main gate and shouted for help. Satpal said, “The couple did not have any personal or profession rivalry.”
Circle Officer of Nazirabad Preeti Bala said: “We are working on several aspects. A case has been registered and the investigation has already started.”
