Vadodara A day after a couple from Jaipur committed suicide at a Vadodara hotel on Saturday, the police said parental opposition to their relationship had forced the couple to take the extreme step.

Police said the boy’s parents were against their marriage, as the girl belonged to a lower caste.

However, their relatives, who had come to take their bodies from the morgue at Sir Sayajirao General Hospital, refused to comment on the issue.

Ghanshyam Yadav (22) from Jaipur and Sapna (19) committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling fan in their hotel room on Saturday night.

Ghanshyam’s brother, Lokesh, said he had left for Kota on February 6 saying that he had some work but actually eloped with the girl, who was identified as the daughter of one Govardhan Sen from the Govindpura locality of Jaipur. Ghanshyam worked with Reliance Limited.

Lokesh added that he had got married a few days ago, when his family had warned Ghanshyam to snap all ties with his girlfriend.

Sub-Inspector B M Rathwa said the girl’s father is a barber by profession and this could be the reason for opposition to their marriage. On the other hand, Lokesh kept on repeating that he never expected such a step from the two when the matter could be amicably resolved.

Rathwa added the girl’s parents traced her whereabouts after they called up Lokesh when she did not turn up till 6 pm on Friday.

“The girl’s parents knew Ghanshyam’s family,” said the officer, who added that there was no reason for the couple to come to Vadodara, as they did not have any relatives.
