Ahmedabad In a major incident of armed robbery committed in the city, an employee of a local courier company has been stabbed and robbed of Rs 14.79 lakh in cash by two unidentified persons at his residence in Sarangpur on Tuesday early morning.

Following the incident, Khadia police have registered the offence and further investigations are on. The victim has been admitted at VS Hospital with two stab injuries and his condition has been reported to be stable.

The victim has been identified as Hakmaji Prajapati (34), a resident of Ghasiram ni Pol in Sarangpur. Prajapati has lodged a police complaint in the case.

According to police, Hakmaji works for the courier firm of Babubhai Kantilal for the past 10 years and that he has been the manager of the firm's Kalol branch for the past five years.

The courier firm is owned by two partners, Shankarlal Prajapati and Somaji. Shankarlal is Hakmaji's uncle and he also owns the house inhabited by Hakmaji and his family for the past seven years.

Police said the incident happened on Tuesday around 5 am when Hakmaji was sleeping in the veranda.

Two unidentified persons attacked him while he was asleep. When Hakmaji resisted, one of the intruders stabbed him twice with a knife and took him inside the house where his wife, Sumatiben, was present along with his five children.

Hakmaji's wife handed over the keys of the safe vault to the two unidentified accused as per their demand. The two then vanished with the money.

Police said for the last years, money collected at the courier firm's Panchkuva office was kept at Hakmaji's residence at night. In her statement before the police, Sumatiben has said that three company staff members — Ashok, Mohan and an unidentified new employee of the firm — had come to deposit the money at Hakmaji's residence on Monday night.

The In-charge Assistant Commissioner of Police, K V Vadher, said, "The robbers have not been identified as it was dark when the incident happened. However, Hakmaji's wife has told us that they spoke in Hindi."

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, K L N Rao, said there has been no major breakthrough in the case yet and the investigations are on to nab the accused. Rao also said that Hakmaji has been operated upon in the V S Hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.
