Mumbai, January 4 The city civil and sessions court on Friday refused to grant a stay on a bailable warrant issued by the Kurla Metropolitan Magistrates court against actoress Sridevi in a cheque bouncing case.

The court has now adjourned the case till Monday.

The Kurla court had issued two bailable warrants amounting to Rs 5,000 each on December 17 after the actress failed to appear in court for a couple of occasions. The two cheques amounting to Rs 92,50,484 and Rs 8,41,85,682 respectively were issued by Sridevi in March 2007 to the complainants as financial assistance to Madhu Gupta of Photo Film Industries and Sushil Gupta of Foto Industries in Juhu.

Subsequently, the cheque bounced and a case under Section 138 was filed by the duo before the Kurla court.

According to Sridevi's lawyer S J Chaurasia, the session judge had refused to stay the order as the acknowledgment of the notice of the application for stay served on the complainant is yet to be received.

“Due to this, the court adjourned the case till Monday,” Chaurasia told Newsline.

“Our contention is that the cheques are forged and it were never issued by us. We have filed a complaint for forgery against the complainants at Esplanade court which is pending,” Chaurasia said. The complainants lawyer A H Negi states that the warrant was issued as she had not appeared in court inspite of repeated orders.
