New Delhi, February 27 Vikas Dahiya, state joint secretary, Rakesh Sharma, state organisational secretary and Manvinder Singh, state executive member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), arrested for vandalism in Delhi University on Monday, were refused bail on Wednesday.

They were produced before the Tis Hazari court in the afternoon, where the court declared that a campus is meant for academic purposes and not for making political leaders. It also stated that Monday’s violence was “undemocratic”.

The Delhi University can now expect a clash between opposing students’ groups on Thursday with the ABVP and the Students Federation of India (SFI) holding demonstrations in North Campus. While the ABVP will demand the removal of the “Three Hundred Ramayana”, the SFI will demand for the book to remain within the syllabus.

The Siksha Bachao Andolan Samity will also be holding a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in support of the ABVP. According to Rohit Chahal, joint secretary of the ABVP, students in Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi and Kurukshetra will also join in the movement.

ABVP State Secretary Niharika Sharma said they were ready for any clash between the rival groups: “Come what may, we are well prepared,” she told Newsline.

The Academic Council that is meeting on Thursday will take the final decision over the syllabus. And though according to Pradip Kumar, member of the council, the Ramayana is not part of the agenda, he expects other members to raise the issue in the meeting. Earlier this month, the History Department had refused to make any changes in the controversial reading material.

Tomorrow’s agenda for the Academic Council will include the admission process for the Law Faculty and plans to shift post graduate courses at DU to the semester system, among others.
