New Delhi Days after Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh was asked to pay up Rs 5,000 for seeking adjournment, he appeared before a Delhi court on Thursday for recording his statement in a cheating case lodged by him.

But he was 10 minutes late, and the judge had issued a warrant against him for not appearing before the court on fixed time.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaweri Baweja issued a bailable warrant for Rs 10,000, which was to be recalled after the Rajya Sabha member made an appearance and requested for its cancellation.

After Singh arrived, his counsel pleaded before the court for recording his statement in the case but the accused had left the court by then and the judge put off the matter till July 13.

The court, however, made it clear to Singh that no more summons would be served upon him and he will have to remain present on the next date for testifying in the case as the complainant.

The court on, February 20, had imposed a cost of Rs 5,000 on the leader for failing to show up and ask for adjournment through his counsel.

The case pertains to a complaint filed by Singh against one Barun Kumar Verma in June 2007 alleging he tried to extort money from him in connection with hearing of a case

in the Supreme Court relating to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

According to the complaint lodged by Singh with the Special Cell of the Delhi Police, the accused, who posed as a law officer, had tried to extort Rs 5 crore from him for helping him in the disproportionate assets case against Yadav.
