Ahmedabad The Communist Party of India (CPI) will hold a rally in Gandhinagar on Thursday demanding benefits for the affected diamond workers in Gjarat.

Arun Mehta, the regional secretary, placed his demands in a letter that the 89 lakh APL card holders should be given their entitled amount of grains, and new BPL cards should be allotted in place of the 9 lakh cards cancelled. The government should keep a check on the distribution of food grains under the ration cards, he added.

“The relief package for the workers should be drafted in a way in which the workers are directly benefited. The rural employment schemes of the government should be implemented soon. The workers should have their share on forestland, and the electricity bills of the houses should be reduced. The certificate on free education for kids of diamond workers should come out soon,” said Mehta.

He claimed that the “Congress and BJP are doing lip-service only and that the condition of the workers is worsening day by day”. He added that the CPI will constantly protest against this attitude of the government.
