Kolkata West Midnapore simmered with tension after a local CPM leader was shot dead by suspected Maoists at Lalgarh, where tribals have been up in arms against alleged police excesses since November last. Agitating tribals also tried to stop the police from reaching the spot where the murder took place, the police said.

The victim has been identified as Nandalal Pal (32), a member of the CPM’s zonal committee and a resident of Murara village.

According to the police, Pal had just finished performing his mother’s last rites and had taken a ritual dip in a pond. “He was shot as he came out of the pond and was preparing to leave for home. Witnesses told us he a group of four persons shot him from close range. We suspect they are Maoists,” police said.

Lalgarh has been in the news for some time now after tribals went on a rampage to protest the arrest of some people for links with Maoists. The police launched a crackdown following the attack on the convoy of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan in November last. The spate of arrests led to widespread agitation as tribals attacked CPM cadres, dug up roads and resorted to protests.
