Kolkata The two-day CPM state committee meeting that concluded on Saturday took stock of the political developments in West Bengal in the wake of the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Politburo member and state unit secretary Biman Bose urged the party units to gear up for Lok Sabha elections. Subhas Chakraborty’s letter urging the re-induction of Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was also discussed briefly.

As part of its drive to gear up the party election machinery, the CPM state leadership has instructed all the party units to set up committee in all the 51,919 booths in the state where polling would be conducted during the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Bose reportedly told party leaders who attended the two-day session that the party and the Left Front will face more difficulties. The rightist parties like Trinamool Congress, Congress and Left extremist forces like the CPI (Maoist) have joined hands to fight against the government and to prevent it from carrying out developmental activities and industrialisation in the state, he added.

Placing a report before the state committee members, Bose also said that fear of land acquisition among the rural population and the government’s failure to deliver on the promises it had made had played a crucial role in the Left’s defeats in the panchayat elections held in May 2008.

Bose also said the central leadership wanted the state party unit in West Bengal to speed up the process of electioneering and prepare for the coming Lok Sabha polls without waiting for the Election Commission (EC) to announce the poll dates.
