Kolkata CPM general secretary Prakash Karat has finally held both his party — the CPM, and the Left Front government responsible for the recent electoral setbacks in West Bengal.

In an article to be published in the Peoples' Democracy, the weekly mouth piece of the party, Karat has written that the recent electoral outcome in Bengal showed that some sections of people have been alienated from the party, and he does not want to hold the government alone responsible for it.

"The causes of such alienation lie in the political sphere and also in the organisational shortcomings and weaknesses of the party. The steps that are being taken to overcome the shortcomings and reforge the links with the people are, therefore, to be taken up in the three spheres — governmental, political and organisational, which are interlinked," Karat wrote.

According to sources, controversies exist regarding the reasons behind the setback for the Left regime in Bengal. A section of the party's leaders in Bengal, including Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, have been insisting that withdrawal of support

from the UPA government in 2008 was the principal cause behind the current disaster.

"Despite its enormous achievements, the LF government also engendered some negative features. It is a part of the basic understanding of the party that running the state government is not the exercise of state power. The bureaucracy, the police and other institutions of the state have not been touched by any basic changes. Working in such a system, in government, has its effects on the party and its organisation," Karat wrote.

Left Front in Bengal under siege: Yechury

London: Left Front in West Bengal is “under siege”, senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said on Saturday. “The Left Front, including the CPM, is under siege in West Bengal. With the unity between Congress, Trinamool, Maoists and some NGO’s creating a similar situation to the anti-fascist terror of 1972-77. The ‘index of unity of opposition’ is now virtually one,” he said. Yechury is now on a visit to London. PTI

KARAT, CPI(M) by PRADIP BISWAS on 21 Jun 2010

AT LAST A MAN IN CPI-M PARTY GOT THE COURAGE TO POINT THE REASON OF THEIR FALL IN BENGAL. IN BENGAL THE LEFT FRONT GOVERNMENT FROM TOP TO GRASS-ROOT LEVEL ARE CORRUPTED, ARROGANT AND VINDICTIVE. MAY BE I MEAN WITH FAINT HOPE I SAY MAY BE ONE OR TWO LEADRS LESS ARROGANT BUT WE PEOPLE IN BENGAL NOW TERRIBLY SCARE OF THESE PEOPLE AND DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM BACK IN POWER IN NEAR FUTURE. AT LEAST A CHANGE WHETHER GOOD OR BAD IS WELCOME BY MAJORITIES ONLY FOR THIS REASON. THE UNFORTUNATE THING IS THAT STILL LEFTS CLAIMING THEY ARE FRIEND OF POOR AND HAVE NOTs WHILE WE FIND EVEN A SMALLEST FRY IS HOBNOBING WITH CRIMINALS, UNETHICAL PERSONNELS AND DOING THEIR BEST TO SERVE THESE PEOPLES' INTERESTS. KARAT REALISED IT BUT NOBODY IN HIS PARTY GIVING A DAMN TO HIS WORD OR WISDOM.
