Kolkata The supporters of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parisad (TMCP) and CPM-backed SFI clashed at two colleges — Jogesh Chandra Law College and Manindra Chandra College in Shyambajar — in Kolkata on Wednesday leaving several students injured.

The reasons behind the clashes at the two colleges were, however, different.

At Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, TMCP accused SFI students of eve teasing a first year student on Tuesday. Today, when they asked the SFI supporters to apologise, clashes broke out that continued for nearly two hours. Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata police (South) Supratim Sarkar reached the spot to bring the situation under control. According to the police, six students were injured in the clashes. Traffic was disrupted at Prince Anwat Shah Road for over an hour.

The district president of SFI’s Kolkata unit, Madhuja Sen Ray, refuted the allegations of eve teasing and said: “Actually, we have been able to decrease the margin of loss (in the recent students’ union polls), which has irked the TMCP members.”

At Maharaja Manindra Chandra College, the two rival student groups clashed over the issue of donation collection carried out by the SFI.

Earlier, the principal of the college had issued a notice that students will not be forced to pay subscription. “The SFI members were distributing the donation tickets of the CPM, and were forcefully collecting money inside the college premises, which is illegal,” said Anindya Raut, TMCP member. Later, the TMCP supporters gheraoed the Shyampukur police station demanding the arrest of the SFI members.

“We were asking for Rs 2 donation for SFI state committee and Rs 5 for Kolkata district. It is the democratic right of students to pay subscription if they want to,” said Dhrubojyoti Chatterjee, Kolkata district secretary of SFI.
