Kolkata A CPM activist was killed and another injured in an attack by a group of suspected CPI (Maoists) on Tuesday evening at Balarampur in Purulia district.

Haradhan Maji (48), a member of the CPM local committee, was shot dead while Chandrasekhar Maji has been admitted to hospital with bullet injuries. The incident took place on the Belna-Bersa road in the Balrampur area around 5 pm.

Four suspected Maoists opened fire on Haradhan and Chandrasekhar when they were travelling on a motor bike. The group was waiting on the road side with firearms to attack them.

While Haradhan died on the spot, Chandrasekhar was taken to hospital by the police, which rushed to the spot after the incident.

Purulia SP said the group fled with the motor bike of Haradhan. Police have started a combing operation in the nearby forest to trace the group, he said.
