Though the fire was extinguished within 15 to 20 minutes, businessman Lucky Sabharwal, a Congress leader, and his servant Rakesh Kumar have received burn injuries.
Lucky was rushed to the Civil Hospital but Rakesh had to be referred to CMCH.
However, their condition is stated to be stable.
Lucky had taken a room on rent in the congested Field Ganj market three days ago from one Balwinder Kumar.
While he was shifting crackers from one room to the other, a cracker burst triggered the fire.
The firemen reached the spot within five minutes but by then the residents had controlled the fire.
SHO division number 2, Surinder Mohan said, "The stock was less and the owner told us that it was the last year's stockpile.
It did not take much time to contain the flames. It is a lapse on the part of the seller and hence action will be taken against him."
He added, "Action will also be taken against the owner of the house who gave this room on rent to be used as a godown."
After the incident, Congress supporters gathered to cover up the incident.
However, the fire team admitted that it could have led to a tragedy because the lanes are narrow and the fire tender cannot enter the colony. It is illegal to store crackers anywhere without having proper fire-fighting equipment.
