According to sources, the team will comprise Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deven Bharti, Senior Police Inspector Arun Chavan of the Property Cell, and Police Inspector Dinesh Kadam of Crime Branch Unit 3. All three have been closely involved in the 26/11 probe and have had access to interrogate Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist caught alive by the police during the attacks.

US security agencies have already displayed keenness to study the Mumbai attacks to help them prevent any similar attacks on their soil, and a team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation had visited the city. The objective of sending the Crime Branch team to the US is to share additional information on the investigations into the planning and the perpetrators, as well as study measures adopted by the security establishment in the US, which has prevented terror attacks post 9/11.
