The strike called by the resident doctors of CSMMU on Wednesday caused undue harassment to the patients and crippled all medical services.

The doctors have been demanding salary in accordance with the hike recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission. The strike was called despite assurances by the Minister for Medical Education, Lalji Verma, and the administration of CSMMU. It was however, called off in the afternoon after a series of talks with the administration.

According to sources, the Principal Secretary, Medical Education, gave a written assurance that the salary for February will be as per the Sixth Pay Commission.

Through the day, only three to four patients were admitted to the Trauma Centre. A patient, Ashok Kumar from Mahoba, reportedly died due to absence of medical care. He had been admitted in the hospital for the last 20 days with serious head injuries.

A large number of patients were forced to either leave the hospital or return without any treatment. Lajpat Rai (69), who was running from pillar to post to get his son admitted, said: “We have come from Barabanki. My son is suffering from typhoid and the doctors in Barabanki asked us to come here. I have been running around for hours but no one is listening.”
