Lucknow, March 8 It may be a coincidence that when the world celebrated the International Women’s Day, the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) got its first woman Vice-Chancellor on Saturday. But this is not the first time for Prof Saroj Chooramani Gopal, the country’s leading paediatric surgeon, to achieve what no other woman had so far achieved.

Recollecting the beginning of her career in the 1970s, Gopal said: “When I applied for masters in surgery, I was told that I will take away a boy’s seat and should rather drop the idea. I told them I would fight my case till the end if they rejected me on the ground that I was a girl. Ultimately, they had to give in.” Supporting the demand of doctors for better remuneration, Gopal said, “What’s wrong if doctors are demanding a hike in the salaries? It is need of the hour.” She added, “We have to give serious thought over imparting moral training. I will discuss with my faculty members and initiate some lectures on human values, ethics, good-patient doctor relationship, and Indian research in medicine also.” Not keen on the idea of a resident doctor’s association, Gopal said that instead she would encourage setting up a student’s forum.
