Recollecting the beginning of her career in the 1970s, Gopal said: “When I applied for masters in surgery, I was told that I will take away a boy’s seat and should rather drop the idea. I told them I would fight my case till the end if they rejected me on the ground that I was a girl. Ultimately, they had to give in.” Supporting the demand of doctors for better remuneration, Gopal said, “What’s wrong if doctors are demanding a hike in the salaries? It is need of the hour.” She added, “We have to give serious thought over imparting moral training. I will discuss with my faculty members and initiate some lectures on human values, ethics, good-patient doctor relationship, and Indian research in medicine also.” Not keen on the idea of a resident doctor’s association, Gopal said that instead she would encourage setting up a student’s forum.
