Kolkata In a bid to save its students from losing precious academic years, the University of Calcutta has decided to incorporate a no-detention policy at the undergraduate level. Now, students would be able to appear in the following year’s examinations even if they had failed to qualify the previous year’s examinations.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Suranjan Das said that a committee has been set up under the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Dhrubojyoti Chattopadhyay to chalk out the details of the no-detention policy. The committee will submit its report in three weeks following which a change in the university statute is likely to be enacted.

“When we started the 1+1+1 system, our effort was to get closer to the semester system, which features the no-detention criteria. We have gained experience over the past few years on this system and are now incorporating a no-detention policy for students,” said Suranjan Das.

The university authorities said that the maximum time frame given to a student will be six years. If a student fails to qualify in the second year’s general papers and has been declared pass in the first year, he can give the general papers of the second year with the papers of the final year. The marks obtained in the first year will remain unchanged if he qualifies the paper prescribed for all the three years. Although the details of the no-detention policy are yet to be framed, sources at the university said that even if a student fails in an honours paper, the student may not be detained and will be allowed to take the following year’s examination.

After the implementation of the 1+1+1 system of examination, the University has had to make several changes in the examination procedure to provide a scope for re-examination to students who fail in the general papers.

Even as a section of students had pressurised the University to hold re-examinations this year, authorities maintain that the decision (to have a no-detention policy) has been taken purely because of academic necessity.

“We have always taken care of the interest of students. However, the protests in the university today when NAAC team was on a visit was uncalled for and motivated to defame the university,” said the Vice-Chancellor.

The protests continued till late in the evening before the university announced to put in place the no-detention resolution. To deal with the present situation, the university has decided on a free-of-cost review of answer scripts, the results of which will be declared by January last week. The forms for the final year examination will be filled in the last week of February.

In case a student is still not satisfied with the review of answer scripts, the university has made a provision that allows a teacher from the college to see the answer scripts of its students.

Presidency bill to be placed on Monday
The bill for conferring university status to Presidency College will be placed before the State Legislative Assembly on Monday for passage. The state government has, in principle, accepted the bill and a nod from the state Cabinet has been obtained. Even the Opposition parties are not likely to oppose the bill when it is placed on the table on Monday.
