The decision was taken after a latest inquiry by retired High Court judge R Mitra found Professor Indubhusan Mondal guilty of molesting the girl. The report was submitted to the syndicate of the university on Tuesday.
Interestingly, two more inquires were set up by the university to probe the matter, stretching the case for nearly three years. “The university has decided to suspend the teacher and asked him to explain his conduct,” said Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University Suranjan Das.
The incident occurred on November 30, 2007 when Mondal allegedly molested the girl in the computer room of Biharilal College.
After the girl lodged a complaint, a number of protests were staged in the university, following which Dean of Arts Sanjukta Dasgupta was asked to look into the matter. The professor, however, received a clean chit fuelling further protests by the students and the teachers.
Thereafter, the university was forced to form another inquiry committee headed by Jita Bhattacharya, a professor of Commerce of the university along with the then dean of Law Amit Sen. In the report, the accused was found guilty and the committee left it to the university to take action against the teacher.
The university then initiated further proceedings against the professor in September 2009 and retired High Court judge R Mitra was nominated by the chief justice of Calcutta High Court for the inquiry.
