The court held H R K Bhatnagar (Superintendent, Customs), Gorakh Pal and Rajiv Kapoor (both Inspectors) and K D Shah (UDC with the office of Assistant Collector, Customs) guilty of cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery and other offences under the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
It also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on Bhatnagar, Pal and Kapoor, and a fine of Rs 60,000 on Shah. Incidentally, Kapoor was one of the officers whose names were recommended for the President’s Award in 2007.
The CBI had alleged that in 1986-87, the accused had facilitated the export of goods that had cost the government a loss of Rs 13.14 lakh.
