Amritsar, February 29 The police have made no headway in the case of rape of a Dalit girl, who died on her way to the hospital yesterday.

A three-doctor team that was constituted by the district administration to confirm rape is also yet to submit its report. The girl’s poor parents have demanded strict action against the accused.

The victim, a resident of Chainwali, near Batala, had gone to her maternal uncle’s village, Nawan Pind, near here, a few days back. Police sources said she was abducted by Bhinda of Khokhar village, where he and his accomplices raped her. She managed to free herself from their clutches, but did not disclose anything about the crime. Yesterday, her condition deteriorated and she died on way to the hospital, said Kotli Surat Mal police station SHO Surinder Singh. He added that they have registered a case under sections 304 and 376 of the IPC and raids were being conducted to trace the accused.

Meanwhile, Batala SSP Rajendra Dhoke said, “We have cogent evidence indicating rape, but we are waiting for the medical report. The accused will be arrested shortly.”

The police said the girl was reportedly also taken to a Baba for cure, but her condition deteriorated. The police are also verifying antecedents of the girl’s parents, as neither did they inform the police nor arrange any medical assistance in time. “The post-mortem report is awaited that will unveil the truth,” said the SSP.
