Mumbai The stone-laying ceremony of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s ambitious Middle Vaitarna dam has been delayed again. This time, it is owing to a seven-day national mourning announced in honour of former President R Venkatraman who died on Tuesday. The new date for the ceremony has not yet been finalised.

Union Urban Development Minister Dr Jaipal Reddy, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray were expected to attend the event, originally scheduled on January 29.

Earlier, the function was postponed from January 22 as Central ministers had to attend Cabinet committee meetings.

Mayor Shubha Raul said the new date for the ceremony has not yet been decided. “We will soon decide on an appropriate date.”

The Rs 1,400-crore dam project, expected to supply 455 mld water per day, seems to be jinxed from its inception. It has already seen a decade’s delay for getting funds and permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forest.

Delays by richard on 29 Jan 2009

Delays have become expensive gifts from the dead to the Indians. Here all want to live forever. I respect our former president Mr.Venkatraman but death is a reality we cannot escape. Name is a recognition factor. through death our body gets separated from its name. Stop this practice of delaying things in the name of the dead. If we continue mourning like this, we may not have many days left to develop ourselves.
