The civic body has failed to identify the leakage in the water supply system and the cause of the contamination. Significantly, while the entire city gets water from the Garden Reach Waterworks, local residents are deprived of potable drinking water.
“There seems to be some technical problem in the distribution line for which the area does not receive adequate supply of drinking water. We will look into the matter soon,” said Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
Meanwhile, KMC has started changing the damaged water pipelines but work remains uncompleted. “We cannot change the entire water distribution system as there is no place left for carrying out the work due to illegal constructions in the area,” said Bibhas Maity, Director General, Water Supply department. Civic water supply in the area has been stopped and water samples have been sent for testing. Boring of some tube wells in the area has also been sanctioned. However, water supply remains poor with water tankers of KMC being unable to reach the spot.
“The lanes are too narrow to allow KMC tankers to pass. Moreover, the lanes are very congested and water tankers cannot be placed in the area,” a civic official added. Bhattacharya has accused the conservancy department for contamination as the place is very dirty and the vats are cleared once in a week. An official of the conservancy department said the matter will be taken care of soon. Nearly 150 people have already visited the health camp set up in the Maulana Azad School by the civic body. Local residents, meanwhile, gheraoed Bhattacharya when he visited the affected area. They demanded a compensation for the family of the deceased child.
