New Delhi Outside the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium, women queued up to participate in the football tournament organised by the Delhi Daredevils. Though some think football is not high on the priority list for women, the turnout showed otherwise.

Having started off at an early age, football is also a career choice for many of these girls. “We started playing football when we were really young,” said Tanvi, who plays for the Eve Soccer Club.

Another girl, Aditi Chauhan, who represented India at the last AFC Under-19 Women’s Championship as a goalkeeper, believes that the AIFF has to take more steps to improve the state of the game in India. “Basketball was my first passion, football caught my attention late. But the AIFF should take some more steps to improve the state of women’s football team by organising more leagues and by forming more clubs,” Chauhan said.

Jhanvi Dubey, who has represented Delhi twice, believes that the media can make the required change. “The media can give us the required motivation. It can also be a big help in inviting supporters to the stands, like in cricket. With media intervention men’s football could take a steep upward curve,” she said.
