Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad, Deepak Ratan said, “We had to fire rounds in the air to scare the students and bring them under control. No untoward incident was reported apart from damage to the buses.”
Ankur Gautam, a 12-year-old student of the Hindi medium school, was crushed to death under a private bus yesterday near the Hapur Chungi. Gautam, a resident of Razaur, was on his way back from school when the incident happened. Students from the school had also smashed the bus on Thursday.
On reaching school on Friday, all the students were informed of the incident and were asked to return home. All the teachers also visited the victim’s family. According to the police, angered by the news, the students took to the roads and created havoc.
The police have taken 12 students into custody as a precautionary measure. Surendra Gautam, father of the victim, said, “We want peace but the reaction by the students shows the crumbling situation of traffic management in the city.”
The school authorities have sent a formal request to the police and SSP Ratan seeking their reassurance that swift action will be taken. SP (Traffic) has also asked for a review of traffic management at the Hapur Chungi crossing.
