The state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Wednesday said it will seek the custody of alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) member Mohammed Sadiq Israr Ahmed Shaikh to probe any possible role played by the outfit in the 7/11 serial blasts case.
“We will definitely be questioning him (Sadiq) after following the due process of law,” said acting ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi.
In September last year, when the Mumbai Police arrested five alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists and blamed them for the Ahmedabad and Delhi serial blasts, they had also claimed that these men were the backbone of a terror module responsible for a majority of terror strikes in the country since 2005, including the 7/11 commuter train blasts in the financial capital that killed 187 people.
The Crime Branch had first arrested five alleged IM operatives — Afzal Mutalib Usmani, 32, Mohammed Sadiq Israr Sheikh, 32, Mohammed Arif Sheikh, 31, Mohammed Zakir Sheikh, 28, and Sheikh Mohammed Ansar, 31. Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor and Joint Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria had announced on September 24, 2008, that these men had posed as Pakistanis and planted bombs on local trains along with Indian accomplices on 7/11.
As many as 16 more alleged IM operatives were arrested subsequently and they have been chargesheeted.
The chargesheet filed by the Crime Branch in the IM case on Tuesday does not mention the earlier claims. However, in an appended document pertaining to sanctions required from the state Home Department for prosecuting the accused under different charges, the Crime Branch states that the IM members “have continued unlawful activities of serious crime i.e. bomb blasts at Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Delhi and Mumbai”.
