“We had received a complaint lodged against the driver, Sudhanshu Bose. But later we came to know the car was driven by Roy,” said Chakrabarty.
The much-loved horse of the Calcutta Mounted Police — 17-year-old thoroughbred Caesar’s Hawk — was knocked down by a car on October 5 while it was trotting along the road near the Maidan as part of a daily morning drill.
Sankar Roy, who was riding the horse, received injuries and had to be hospitalized after he fell off from Caesar’s Hawk.
According to a senior police officer, the officer on duty at the accident site reported the incident first and reported that the car, which had hit the horse, was being driven by Roy. But the complaint was filed against Sudhangshu Bose, Roy’s official driver. Bose was arrested but granted bail later in the day.
Caesar’s Hawk used to stay in a stable at S N Banerjee Road since he was gifted to the mounted police by the race course authorities in 1999. Roy, however, could not be contacted despite several attempts.
