Chandigarh The office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Chandigarh, is clueless about the number of gallantry award winners residing in the city. This came to light after the DC office filed its reply to a Right to Information (RTI) application moved by Advocate H C Arora who had sought information as to whether the Gallantry Awardees, residing in Chandigarh, are being invited by the Administration for attending Republic Day or Independence Day functions.

The Public Information Officer (PIO) of the DC Office, on January 28, stated: “It is intimated that neither any of such awardees has informed this office that he is residing in Chandigarh nor this office has any list of any such awardees as mentioned in your application under reference. Accordingly, no invitation cards under such categories of awardees on Republic Day or Independence Day has been issued.”

Arora, however, maintained that information procured from the District Sainik Welfare Officer, Chandigarh, indicates that as many as 30 gallantry awardees are residing in Chandigarh in addition to 11 families of those who had been conferred with the Gallantry awards posthumously. The list includes 6 Mahavir Chakra awardees; 16 Vir Chakra awardees; and 7 Shaurya Chakra awardees. Among the families of gallantry awardees residing in Chandigarh are two kin of Ashok Chakra awardees, three of Mahavir Chakra awardees; three relatives of Vir Chakra awardees; one of a Kirti Chakra awardee and two of Shaurya Chakra awardees.
