Chandigarh UT Deputy Commissioner R K Rao is all set for another extension of one year, after his present tenure ends in May 2009. UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues (Retd) has already moved a recommendation to the Centre for retaining Rao as the Deputy Commissioner for another year.

Rao, who is due to retire in July 2010, will be completing his four-year stint as Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, in May 2009. Sources at Raj Bhawan confirmed that General Rodrigues is ‘too keen’ on retaining Rao for another one year and in fact, has sent a strong recommendation for his extension.

A Haryana cadre IAS officer, Rao’s tenure as Deputy Commissioner ended last year, following which, he got an extension till May 2009. If the extension is granted, Rao will be completing five years as the UT Deputy Commissioner.

Meanwhile, Rao has also been appointed as the Returning Officer for the forthcoming elections. The Election Commission of India has recently issued guidelines regarding the posting of officers for the Lok Sabha elections.

According to the guidelines, an officer cannot continue on the present posting, if he/she has completed three years in the district (where he is posted) during the last four years or would be completing three years on or before May 31, 2009. Chandigarh, however, has been exempted from the condition.
