New Delhi, January 8 Now that Delhi have made it to the Ranji Trophy final—they last reached in 1996-97—they want to win the title by hook or by crook.

DDCA sports secretary Sunil Dev will be writing to the BCCI requesting it to relieve two Delhi players—Virat Kohli and pacer Pradeep Sangwan—to strengthen their ranks in the Ranji final against Uttar Pradesh in Mumbai between January 16 and 20.

Talking to Sportline here today, Dev said that he would be shooting off an official letter to BCCI to relieve the duo, which is with the under-19 Indian squad, currently touring South Africa .

“We need them because it is an important match. If you have a better side then why not go with it? For them playing for Delhi would give a better exposure and it would be good for them as well as the Delhi team. So I will be writing a letter to BCCI asking them to relieve the two from national duty. But our first preference would be pacer Pradeep Sangwan,” said Dev.

“Both Sangwan and Kohli have been performing well for us and keeping in mind the wicket we will get in Mumbai, we would require the services of these players,” he added.

DDCA had earlier made a similar request to the BCCI before the team left for South Africa, but the latter had turned it down.

While most states would prefer their players to turn out for the national squad, the DDCA’s request to relieve its players for the domestic meet sounds unusual. Moreover, Kohli has been named skipper of the under-19 squad that will play in the world cup.
