Sources said the second autopsy report points to suicide although reports of the final findings and the viscera examination are yet to be received by the CID.

Over the past three days, the CID has questioned Manna’s plainclothes squad comprising assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) Debjit Guha and Goutam Sarkar and constable Ashish Pal. The problem, investigators said, could have its roots in the decision taken by Manna’s superiors to change his job role from heading the plainclothes (PC) squad to general duty.

Manna’s family members had claimed he had complained often in the recent past that he was being “harassed” by his superiors. On Tuesday, Manna’s superior, inspector-in-charge Manab Chakraborty, was transferred out. Manna, incidentally, carried out the inquest of Rizwanur Rehman after his body was found under the Dum Dum GRP’s jurisdiction.

“Manna had been heading the PC squad for nearly three years now. As per our findings, orders had come for him to change over to general duty. Manna, for reasons yet unknown, did not want to move to general duty. Just being asked to change his job role cannot be ‘mental harassment’ by any measure. We are trying to ascertain if he was in money-related trouble,” sources said.

Additional Director-General (Railways) Dilip Mitra said it was usual practice to change an officer’s role within a police station every two years. “Such changes are done at the discretion of the Superintendent of Police (SP). The station IC may recommend that a certain officer’s job role be changed,” Mitra said.

In two of the last three calls made to his Dasnagar, Howrah residence on the night of February 10, Manna had told his parents to “destroy all documents related to the Dasnagar house and the loan”. The house, his parents told media following his death, had been purchased with the help of a loan.

State home secretary Ardhendhu Sen said the administration is still of the opinion that Manna had committed suicide. “His lifestyle is being investigated. We have also not come across any bank account in his name,” he said.

Sources said Manna’s income from his job was Rs 15,000, but over the past few years, he had paid for his sister’s wedding, purchased a motorcycle and owned high-end mobile handsets. Apart from this, he was paying back the loan taken to purchase land in Dasnagar and to build the house.
