Banerjee had claimed at least 150 of her followers have been killed by CPM “goons” after the Lok Sabha elections.
CPM spokesperson Md. Selim said at a press conference today that the list of “so-called martyrs” was far from truth and cited example of one Jaydeb Bag, a close relative of a Trinamool MLA who was named in the martyrs’ list.
“Bag is still living at Baruipur and has a shop of electrical equipment. According to Mamata, Bag was killed by CPM men and an FIR was lodged at the Baruipur police station. But since the Lok Sabha polls, there was no record in the police station that any person with the name of Joydeb Bag was killed. No such person even committed suicide or died an unnatural death,” said Selim.
Citing a second example, Selim claimed Banerjee had made false claims about the murder of one Samsud Tarafdar in Canning in South 24-Parganas district. “Samsud was a Congress worker and according to the FIR lodged by his brother Tamjer, the prime accused are Selim Mollah and Palan Mondal — both Trinamool activists. Palan is the secretary of a village-level Trinamool committee,” Selim said.
The former claimed that Sarifa Bibi, who has also been named by Mamata, was actually a CPM supporter in Nadia district and was killed by Trinamool-backed “goons” on July 31 this year. “A village feud resulted in the murder but the criminals, according to the complaint lodged by Sarifa’s mother-in-law, were Abu Khayer Mondal and Azai Seikh, who were arrested. Both incidentally belong to the Trinamool,” said Selim.
“In a deliberate attempt to malign our party and government, the Trinamool chief has resorted to a blatant lie. We will go to the people to explain the ploy against us,” he said.
The CPM leader wondered how a Union minister can place a report based on lie before the Prime Minister. “We have also submitted a list to the Central team that visited West Bengal recently. But no one will be able to find out a single error in our list,” said Selim.
Trinamool activist hacked to death
A Trinamool Congress activist was hacked to death in Bhagwanpur in Bhangar, South 24-Parganas, on Friday night, said the police.
Amjad Ali (50) was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by six youths when he was returning home from his party office. He was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Mukul Roy, Union MoS for Shipping, along with Trinamool leader Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay and local MLA Aramul Islam visited the victim’s family and offered condolences. While holding the CPM responsible for the killing, Roy asked his party workers not to get provoked by their (CPM’s) tactics. “It is a shame that innocent people are being targeted in the region and the CPM is unleashing its politics of violence. They are trying to spread fear in the minds and hearts of the local people through such acts. The police have told us that no arrests have been made so far although an investigation is on,” said Roy.
L N Meena, SP, South 24-Parganas said: “So far no arrests have been made. We are investigating the case and probing all angles.”
