“If anyone thinks the formula we followed during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls will remain effective in the Assembly or municipal polls too, then I must say he or she is wrong,” Mukherjee said at a public meeting at Ahiritolla in north Kolkata.
The Congress veteran said during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, his party contested just 14 of the 42 seats. “We had sacrificed 28 seats for Trinamool. Now the party is claiming they won the parliamentary polls on their own. They (Trinamool) may win the 2011 Assembly elections on their own. But I can assure you the Congress will also increase its strength in the coming Assembly polls,” he said, adding the Congress would never be wiped out in Bengal.
“We had only one MP from West Bengal in 1998. Our critics then said our party will turn into a signboard. But we increased our strength since then and won six Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal. Those who believe the Congress will be nowhere in West Bengal are living in a fool’s paradise. The Congress was in West Bengal, it is here and it will remain in the state in future too,” Mukherjee said.
