Putting an end to their differences, the District Bar Association (DBA) in Sector 17 and the UT Administration have entered into an agreement over the construction of new judicial complex at Sector 43.

The two parties had locked horns over the issue of construction of chambers and the main building of judicial complex.

The lawyers of the UT District Bar Association had strongly objected to the estimated budget of Rs 56.46 crore calculated by the UT Administration for the construction of the judicial complex.

In order to amicably resolve the issue, the case was referred to the Building Committee, comprising High Court judges.

As per the agreement, the main building and chambers for advocates will be constructed by the DBA while the underground parking and the basement will be constructed by the Administration.

However, the Bar Association will bear the cost of the construction. The Building Committee has approved the design of the lawyers’ chambers in the complex.

Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar said he will get the land demarcated for the lawyers’ chambers within a week.

At present, 350 chambers have been proposed for the chambers but keeping in mind the demand for more, the Administration has agreed to permit another floor thereby adding 90 more chambers.

Advocate H S Awasthi said some members of the DBA have formed a society for the construction of the lawyers’ chambers on self-financing basis, which is open to all the members.

Advocate N K Nanda, president of the District Bar Association, said the society under the terms and conditions of allotment of land for chambers cannot have any locus standi by itself unless the Bar Association asks the society to do so.
